Understanding Correlation & Regression

Correlation measures the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables. The correlation coefficient (r) ranges from -1 to 1:

  • r = 1: Perfect positive correlation (points form a line sloping upward)
  • r = -1: Perfect negative correlation (points form a line sloping downward)
  • r = 0: No correlation (points are randomly scattered)

Regression finds the line of best fit through the data points, which can be used to predict values of one variable based on the other.

Instructions

  • Click on the canvas to add data points
  • Drag points to move them around
  • Watch how the correlation coefficient and regression line change in real-time
  • Use the buttons to add random points or reset the canvas
  • Scale: X and Y axes both range from -5 to +5
  • Copy data points from the table for your own calculations
